RIIZE (Hangul: 라이즈; Japanese: ライズ; stylized in all caps) is a South Korean six-member boy group under SM Entertainment. They debuted on September 4, 2023 with the single album "Get A Guitar". The lineup consists of Shotaro, Eunseok, Sungchan, Wonbin, Sohee and Anton. Originally as seven, Seunghan left the lineup on October 13, 2024.
Name[]
The group's name, Riize, is a name created by combining "Rise," which means "growth," and "Realize", which means "a team that grows together and realizes dreams."[1]
Career[]
2020-2023: Pre-debut activities[]
Members Shotaro and Sungchan previously debuted in SM's boy group, NCT, being unveiled as part of the lineup in October 2020.[2] On July 1, 2022, SM Entertainment introduced Eunseok and Seunghan as part of their SM Rookies lineup.[3][4] In November 2022, it was announced that they would star in the reality show Welcome to NCT Universe, hosted by Shotaro and Sungchan.[5][6]
The first mentions of SM's new boy group came on February 3, 2023, when SM released a video detailing the company's future plans with SM 3.0. In the video, they explained that the group would be debuting in the fourth quarter of 2023, with the pronahject led by SM Entertainment COO Tak Young Jun.[7]
On May 24, 2023, SM released a video regarding their future plans for the group, announcing that Shotaro and Sungchan would leave NCT to join the lineup and that Eunseok and Seungchan would be making their debut.[8] They also confirmed that more members "of Korean and American nationalities" would be joining the group.[9][10] On July 11, several media outlets confirmed that the seven-member boy group was filming their debut MV for a projected September debut.[11] In response to media reports about Yoon Sang's son Anton Lee joining the group, SM stated that they would begin revealing information about the group on August 1.[12][13] On July 31, SM confirmed that the group would debut as "RIIZE", opening their official Instagram on August 1, ahead of their debut in September.[14] On August 1, the member profiles of all seven members were revealed, alongside the group's Instagram.[15][16]
2023: Official debut with "Get A Guitar", "Talk Saxy", "Get A Guitar (English Ver.)", Seunghan's hiatus[]
On August 7, 2023, SM Entertainment announced that the group will be making their debut on September 4 with the release of their first single album, Get A Guitar.[17] A pre-release single "Memories" will be released on August 21.[18]
On October 13, SM Entertainment revealed that RIIZE will be releasing a new song in late October.[19] On October 23, RIIZE announced that they will release the digital single "Talk Saxy" on October 27.[20]
On November 9, RIIZE released their first English digital single "Get A Guitar (English Ver.)".[21]
On November 22, a statement was released which announced that member Seunghan would take an indefinite hiatus from all activities for the time being.[22]
2024: "Love 119", "Love 119 (Japanese ver.)", "Siren", "Impossible", Riizing, Japanese debut, Riizing : Epilogue, Seunghan's departure[]
Through SM Entertainment's 3Q23 earning release, it was revealed that RIIZE will be releasing two singles, including a Japanese one, in early 2024.[23] On December 6, 2023, SM Entertainment confirmed the reports of RIIZE making their comeback with their new single on January 5, 2024.[24] On January 1, the group announced their third digital single titled "Love 119".[25]
On January 24, RIIZE released their first Japanese digital single "Love 119 (Japanese ver.)".
On February 8, SM Entertaiment revealed that RIIZE will be releasing a mini album and a single in the second half of the year.[26] On March 6, SM confirmed that the group will be having a comeback in April.[27] On April 1, it was reported that RIIZE will be releasing the full version of "Siren" on April 3, ahead of their comeback.[28] On April 3, RIIZE confirmed the release of "Siren" later that day, along with the releases of "Impossible" on April 18, and their first mini album Riizing sometime in June.[29] On May 20, RIIZE announced that the mini album will be released on June 17.[30]
On May 8, SM Entertainment announced that RIIZE will be releasing a Japanese single in the third quarter of the year.[31] On May 20, RIIZE announced that they will be debuting with the single "Lucky" on September 5.[30] On July 23, it was announced that "Lucky" will be released digitally on July 29, and physically on September 5.[32]
On September 2, RIIZE announced that they will be releasing the repackage of their first mini album, Riizing : Epilogue, on September 4.[33]
On October 10, after a year-long hiatus, Wizard Production, the SM Entertainment division in charge of managing the group, announced that Seunghan would resume his activities with RIIZE starting November.[34] However, on October 13, Wizard Production released a new statement explaining that Seunghan would leave the group after he personally expressed his desire to leave for the sake of both the other members and the fans.[35][36]
